I would say do some research first before going into negotiations with the employer. Then attempt to make them say what the salary range is for the position. If they don't then you have to consider what your walkaway magic number is. Then make your best guess and come up with a guesstimate number. Also consider the other perks that come with this job and also opportunities for pay raises. I am a person who sees big picture, but I won't settle for less as well.
